Mary and Joseph had to go to what seems to have been a stable (because of the reference to a ‘manger’), possibly constructed from a natural cave. It may have seemed strange to the couple to find the inn closed to them in this way. Angels had spoken of the glorious nature of their child, yet there was no open home in which he could be born.
